UHS PRINCIPLES
OF ENGINEERING - PROJECT NASCAR
NASCAR
FEVER HITS MIDDLEBURGH
NASCAR
in Middleburgh? Well they may not be the real thing, but they are the
closest thing to it. Students in Mr. Gray's Principles of Engineering
class are working on designing and building 8 quarter scale NASCARS, capable of
reaching speeds of over 50 MPH. The car is approximately 4 feet long, 20
inches wide, and is radio controlled. The students have to develop a race
team, find sponsorship, prepare a website, and design their cars on AutoCAD and
Solidworks. When their designs are complete they will begin to construct
their creations. Using only materials found locally in hardware stores,
the students have to construct their cars with lightweight materials like
aluminum and lexan. Many businesses have helped with sponshorship money
for the construction of the cars. The students and Mr. Gray have raised
more than $4,000.00 worth of sponsorship money for this project. Kintz
Plastics Inc. of Cobleskill has donated time and materials for the
project. Roger Cusano, an engineer at Kintz, has helped create a
"plug" mold of a Monte Carlo body for the cars. Kintz will
thermoform bodies over the mold for our cars. City Glass of Cobleskill
donated the lexan for the frames of the cars. Dave Symons of Mid-Valley Auto
Parts - NAPA, donated many cans of paint which we will use on the bodies.
We were also very surprised to receive 36 BRAND NEW tires from Todd Bishop of
Bishop Racing Products, who donated more than $1600.00 worth of wheels and tires
to the project. Other area sponsors who donated money can be found on each
team website. Thank you to all of our sponsors.
