UHS PRINCIPLES
OF ENGINEERING - PROJECT MODIFIED
PROJECT MODIFIED
Even
though we are starting the year off $2000 in the hole after the theft of 3
NASCARS from Mr. Gray's classroom, the students in Mr. Gray's UHS Principles of Engineering
class overwhelmingly decided to continue on and build 4 quarter scale
MODIFIEDS. These cars will be capable of
reaching speeds of over 50 MPH. The car is approximately 4 feet long, 20
inches wide, and is radio controlled. The students have to develop a race
team, find sponsorship, prepare a website, and design their cars on AutoCAD and
Solidworks. When their designs are complete they will begin to construct
their creations. Using only materials found locally in hardware stores,
the students have to construct their cars with lightweight materials like
aluminum and lexan. Many businesses have helped with sponsorship money
for the construction of the cars. We are in the process now of gathering
materials, and building a prototype. The students have raised more than $4000 worth of sponsorship. A Texas distributor has offered 5
brand new engines for the project at his cost. Purchasing new engines
would replace the three that were stolen, and will eliminate the problems that
we had with them last year. Also we are starting this project 10 weeks
early with the hope of completion by early May. Kintz
Plastics Inc. of Cobleskill has donated materials for the project, which will be
used in the construction of the car bodies. Pictures our prototype for the project, can be seen in the link below. If
you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please e-mail Mr. Gray at grayse@midtel.net.
We look forward to seeing you at TECHNOPALOOZA JUNE 12, 2004!!
